My downloads have not been able to start. I also tried with SSL and non-SSL (us.secure.news.astraweb.com:443 and news.astraweb.com:119) I used to be with Astraweb and had no problems for ages. I started experiencing the same problems as the OP and in the process of isolating the problem signed up for a 3 day trial of supernews. The problem disappeared so cancelled Astraweb and signed up with Supernews. The same blocks missing in Astraweb downloaded fine from supernews.
The news server is Giganews, and as a test, Astraweb. It would have been difficult for Verizon's discontinued service to have worked earlier in the week, let alone this morning. As an update, its a sporadic problem apparently, in that it began working again for about 2 hours then cut off. Still not working as of 4 PM.
